The announcement had been delivered with such cheerful efficiency, a small pamphlet outlining the benefits of a new fence. The words, however, grated on Leo's nerves. His heart pounded in his chest, a frantic drumbeat against his ribs.

He stopped taking his usual walks. The thought of meeting the neighbor, of having to engage in small talk about the impending construction, sent a wave of nausea over him. He started keeping the blinds closed, shutting out the sun.
