The children were excited. "A fence!" they'd exclaimed. But for Clara, the news felt like a physical blow. The cheerful chatter of the neighborhood now felt… oppressive.

She had always enjoyed the open spaces, the ability to see beyond her own property. Now, there would be a barrier, a hard line. Her shoulders slumped.
