The knocking started again, a steady, insistent rhythm that hammered against her already fragile nerves. Sarah flinched, her breath hitching in her throat. She stayed perfectly still. She could hear voices, muffled through the door.

She backed away slowly, her heart pounding. Her fingers dug into her palms. She found herself crouching in the corner of her bedroom, pulling her knees to her chest, trying to make herself as small as possible, as if she could vanish from sight.
