Gemotions

The attic air hung thick and heavy, smelling of dust and forgotten things. Clara ran a hand across the peeling paint of a trunk she'd never noticed before. Inside, nestled among moth-eaten shawls, she discovered it: a leather-bound notebook with her mother's familiar, elegant script. Her heart thudded a frantic rhythm against her ribs.

She flipped it open, her fingers trembling slightly. The first page read, "Bucket List: Before I go..." The list was filled with impossible dreams – learn to speak Italian, swim with dolphins, see the Northern Lights. Clara's stomach clenched. She felt a wash of coldness despite the stifling heat.

Her gaze landed on the last item: "Tell my daughter the truth." Clara slammed the notebook shut, her breath hitching. She had no idea what her mother meant, and the not knowing churned inside her. The shadows in the attic seemed to deepen, and she retreated down the creaking stairs, a disquieting knot forming in her chest.
