He tried to focus on his chemistry textbook, but the words danced on the page, refusing to make sense. His heart hammered against his ribs, a frantic, irregular rhythm. The college closing… it was a nightmare. A horrible, tangible nightmare.

He pushed his chair back from the desk, unable to sit still. He walked to the window, the familiar view of the campus suddenly alien. His hands felt cold, even though the room was warm. He pressed his forehead against the glass, the cold surface a welcome sensation against his fevered skin.
