The news arrived in a curt phone call. "We've offered the position to another candidate." Liam hung up the phone and leaned against the wall, a wave of heat washing over him. He knew exactly who it was. The job was perfect for him, and the other candidate was probably better. He knew it in his soul, and that knowledge was crippling.

He pictured his friend, Mark, celebrating with the team. Mark, who always seemed to get what he wanted. He felt a need to throw something, to scream, to lash out. He pushed himself away from the wall, his hands clenching into fists. The world, for a moment, seemed to tilt.
