The party was supposed to be a celebration. It was his friend’s birthday, but he couldn't help but notice, at the corner of the room, the hushed tones, the shared glances, and the subtle shift in social dynamics. All he could see was James, standing next to the boss, laughing easily. He had gotten the job.

He reached for a drink, his hand shaking slightly as he brought the glass to his lips. He tried to join in the conversation, but his voice sounded hollow, distant. Every word felt like a lie. The music seemed too loud, the laughter too forced. The room began to spin. He needed to get out.
