The old photo album lay open on the table. “That trip to the mountains…” John began, his eyes gleaming with happiness. “The best vacation ever! Remember the breathtaking views, the amazing hikes, the laughter?”

I felt a tightening in my chest. My hands felt clammy. The trip had been a disaster. Bad weather, arguments, and a pervasive feeling of unhappiness. I'd never wanted to return so badly.

I tried to speak, but the words caught in my throat. I couldn't look at the photo. His memories were so pristine, so idyllic. Mine were tainted and bleak. I had to get away, I had to be alone. I wanted to disappear.
