The attic air hung thick and dusty, catching in Maya’s throat. A single shaft of sunlight sliced through the gloom, illuminating swirling motes as she hefted another cardboard box. Inside, a chaotic jumble of papers threatened to spill over. Her fingers, usually steady, fumbled as she recognized her own childish scrawl on a faded book report cover. Her pulse quickened.

She sank to her heels, the box’s contents suddenly radiating a strange intensity. A crayon drawing of a lopsided house. A spelling test, riddled with red ink corrections. Each item unearthed a memory, but twisted it into something unnerving. Why had her mother kept all of this?

Her breath hitched. She began to sort through the papers with a desperate urgency, her hands shaking as she pulled out more and more of her past. What else was hidden here, a silent testament to her childhood?
