The sterile smell of the hospital corridor intensified as David walked toward the patient information desk. His palms were clammy, his steps hesitant. He clutched the email, the words blurred now from the moisture. He felt like he was wading through thick mud.

He swallowed hard, trying to appear composed, but his jaw clenched involuntarily. The young woman at the desk looked up, her expression friendly, but David's mind was a battlefield. He struggled to maintain eye contact.
