The phone felt heavy in Emily's hand. She dialed her husband, but before the call connected, she hung up. She paced her apartment, the hardwood floor creaking under her hurried steps. The numbers, fresh in her memory, danced before her eyes.

She bit her lip, a habit she’d long tried to break. The injustice of it all churned in her stomach.

She grabbed her keys and fled the apartment, needing to get out, to *do* something, anything to distract from the bitter taste in her mouth. She drove aimlessly, the city lights blurring through a sudden sheen of tears.
