"So, how's that new marketing hire working out?" Mr. Henderson asked casually, leaning back in his chair. Michael’s smile felt frozen on his face. He knew. He had seen the paperwork. That new hire, fresh out of her master's, was making more than him.

The words caught in his throat. He forced himself to take a breath.

“She’s… enthusiastic,” he managed to croak out. His voice was thin and reedy. He felt a bead of sweat trickle down his temple. The fluorescent light above him seemed to be amplifying all his insecurities.
