He’d always loved the old house, with its creaky floors and rambling layout. But now, as he examined the back of the built-in wardrobe in the master bedroom, his fondness curdled into something else. The wood seemed to have been tampered with.

A section of the paneling swung inward with a jarring squeak. His heart began to race. He leaned forward, squinting into the gloom. He didn’t like the way the shadows danced in there.

His breath became shallow and rapid. He ran his hand over his face, as if trying to wipe away the scene before him. "What… what is this?" he muttered, his voice cracking. He felt a profound disorientation, as if the very foundation of his life was shifting.
