James felt a prickling heat rise from his neck. He was at a charity gala, forced to make small talk. He looked at the woman talking to him and recognized the diamond bracelet adorning her wrist. He'd given a very similar one to "Emily" last month.

He could feel a flush creeping up his cheeks. He took a sip of champagne. It did nothing to settle his stomach. He was trapped in a conversation about a vineyard he knew quite well. “He” had taken both of them there.

“So, David… he seems… very… generous,” James stammered, his gaze darting around the room, desperately seeking an exit. He began to feel a throbbing in his temples.
