"Pride and Prejudice," a well-loved copy, became the source of a jolt for Daniel. Inside, wedged between pages detailing a ball, was a tiny, folded note. His hands started to sweat.

The paper felt brittle, fragile. The handwriting was hurried, almost frantic. He read of a secret, a cover-up, and a desperate need for silence. He felt a wave of disquiet wash over him.

He glanced at the bookstore patrons, now seeing them differently. He quickly folded the letter back up and shoved it into his pocket, his knuckles white. He had to decide what to do.
