Clara, a librarian by trade, found the letter in a dog-eared copy of "Dracula." She knew the book well, but this was a surprise. Her hand, usually steady, shook as she held the delicate paper.

The letter was written in a flowing script, detailing a clandestine affair, a disappearance, and a possible crime. The words seemed to writhe on the page. She couldn’t shake the sense of something amiss.

She felt a sudden need for fresh air. She stood, placed the book back on the shelf, and turned to leave. She would have to return, but she needed to think.
