He found it wedged between the front door and the wall, a slim white envelope addressed to "Mr. Silas Black." The name was familiar. The previous tenant, a man who had vanished without a trace. His heart pounded in his chest, a frantic rhythm against his ribs.

He slammed the door shut, as if the physical act could somehow protect him. He ran to the kitchen, seeking a distraction, anything to calm his nerves.
