The demolition notice, crisp and official, trembled in Amelia's grasp. It was like holding a venomous insect. Her knuckles were white as she clutched it, rereading the cold, impersonal words. Her childhood home. Gone. A chill, deeper than the autumn air, settled in her bones.

She slammed the document onto the counter, the force of it jarring through her arm. She needed coffee, strong coffee, now. The silence of the kitchen, usually comforting, was suddenly oppressive. Every creak of the floorboards, every tick of the clock, felt amplified, mocking.

"Well, this is just great," she muttered, the words barely audible. She ran a hand through her hair, a frantic gesture of disbelief. The house… it held so many memories, so many echoes of laughter and tears. What would happen to all of it?
