The insistent scratching at the fence sent a wave of nausea through Liam. He dropped the book he was reading, its pages fluttering in the sudden stillness. It had only been a matter of time. The pug was back.

He’d spent the morning meticulously cleaning his car, getting it ready for a road trip. The idea of mud, or worse, paw prints all over his shiny paint made his stomach turn.

He slowly rose, his legs feeling heavy. He knew he had to stop the dog, before he could do too much damage. He walked towards the fence with a slow, deliberate pace.
