The tiny, chipped coffee mug trembled in Leo's grasp. He stared across the kitchen table at Maya, her face alight with an enthusiasm that felt intensely threatening. "Just imagine," she was saying, "a little fluffball bouncing around, bringing so much joy!" Leo’s stomach twisted. He pictured shedding fur, early morning walks, and the sheer responsibility. He swallowed hard, the bitterness of the untouched coffee suddenly overwhelming.

“Maya, we barely have time to keep the dishes clean,” Leo countered, his voice cracking slightly. He felt a prickle of sweat start at the back of his neck. The thought of adding a creature dependent on them to the equation made him feel trapped, a sensation that tightened his chest.

He pushed the mug away, the ceramic scraping harshly against the wooden table. His hands felt clammy. This was a nightmare.
