He re-read the email three times, each reading a fresh plunge into the abyss. He had poured years of his life, his heart and soul, into this book. The rejection felt like a death knell. He felt utterly hollow.

He felt a sudden, overwhelming urge to break something. He grabbed a ceramic mug from his desk and hurled it against the wall. The sound was sharp, brutal. Shards of pottery scattered across the floor.

He stared at the mess, the anger slowly draining away, replaced by a profound, desolate sadness. He sank to his knees.
