The document, dated 1998, was a letter of resignation from his father's law firm. He blinked, rereading the phrase, "irreconcilable differences."

Arthur’s hands trembled as he picked up the paper, the once-familiar handwriting of his father now appearing alien and cryptic. He reeled, a strange pressure building behind his eyes. He’d always believed his father had loved the firm.

He felt a sudden need for air, and rushed to the window, throwing it open to the night. Why had his father left? What had he never been told? A dizzying sensation of unease washed over him.
