The weight of the heavy oak door seemed to press down on Maria as she entered the cluttered attic. Her brother, Daniel, already clutched a leather-bound book, his eyes sparkling with avarice. The solicitor's voice, as dry as parchment, floated down to her. “Daniel receives the family's shares in the oil company.”

Maria’s breath hitched. Oil. She'd always been the practical one, the one who craved stability. She felt a sudden, sharp pain in her temple. Her vision blurred momentarily. The solicitor continued, “Maria, you receive the family's collection of antique musical instruments.” Maria stared at the dusty, forgotten instruments. A cello, a battered piano, a flute missing a key. Her hands trembled. She needed air.
