The sterile air of the hospital room felt suffocating. Elias, leaning heavily on his cane, watched his sister, Sarah, flip through the glossy brochure the lawyer had presented. A slight tremor ran through his hands. The lawyer announced, “Sarah, you inherit the family's art collection, including the Renoir.” Sarah beamed, already planning renovations.

Elias focused on the pale, flickering light of the fluorescent bulbs overhead. He could barely bring himself to meet his sister's gaze. “Elias, you receive the family's vast collection of medical journals.” He swallowed hard, the lump in his throat making it difficult. He imagined a room filled with dusty tomes, the pages brittle with age. He struggled to maintain his composure, grasping the cane a little tighter.
