"The deed is done," the lawyer said, his voice echoing in the grand hall of the family mansion. Emily felt a prickle of unease crawl up her spine. Her brother, Robert, was practically vibrating with excitement. He'd always been the ambitious one, the one who craved power. The solicitor continued, “Robert receives the controlling interest in the family publishing house.”

Emily forced a smile. She was prepared for something of this nature. "And Emily," the lawyer said, turning to her with a sympathetic look, "You inherit the family's extensive collection of vintage cookbooks." Emily’s world seemed to shrink. Cookbooks. Her breath came in short, shallow gasps. She clutched at her chest, fighting a wave of dizziness. She needed to escape.
