The email notification pinged, and David immediately knew. Subject line: "Your childhood home is now for sale." A cold dread settled over him. His palms began to sweat. He had tried to put the past behind him.

He clicked on the link, his fingers feeling clumsy and stiff. The photographs of the house, bathed in the harsh glare of modern photography, sent a jolt of shock through him. The new paint, the updated landscaping… it was a betrayal of the ghosts that still haunted those walls.

He felt a deep and visceral unease, a knot tightening in his gut. He should call his brother, he decided. He had to. He needed to know if he felt this too.
