It was the construction next door. The rhythmic hammering, the grinding of metal, had started early. The noise had always been a nuisance, but today, it was unbearable.

He threw back the covers, his heart hammering in his chest. He paced his bedroom, his hands clashed behind his back. He felt a powerful impulse to yell. To scream.

He clenched his fists, forcing himself to breathe. He stared out the window at the construction site, the source of his torment. He had to be calm. But he couldn't. It was not going to stop.
