He felt a cold sweat break out across his forehead. Alex found the file on Liam’s tablet, opened in the middle of the night. Liam’s new novel was called “The Unseen Observer.” It was a detailed, intimate portrayal of their lives, their routines, their secrets. But the narrative cast him as a villain. A controlling, deceitful partner.

Alex rubbed his eyes, a strange tingling sensation spreading through his fingers. He felt the blood draining from his face. He’d thought they were happy. He dropped the tablet, the metallic clang echoing in the silence. He went to the kitchen and poured himself a glass of water, and then poured the water out. He wanted to throw up.
