The room seemed to shrink, the walls closing in. The manuscript, titled “The Perfect Facade,” lay open on the coffee table. Thomas had found it while looking for the TV remote. The main character, a woman named Clara, bore an uncanny resemblance to his girlfriend, Jessica. The narrative portrayed her as someone utterly selfish, a woman who cared only for her own gain.

He felt a tightness in his chest, a sensation akin to being physically squeezed. He started pacing, running his fingers through his hair, his mind racing. He felt a cold dread begin to solidify in his stomach. He wished he could unsee it, wished he could go back to not knowing.
