The phone rang. It seemed to amplify the silence in the small apartment. She snatched it up, her fingers flying over the keypad. The voice on the other end, a stranger, a fan of the book. They were excited, ecstatic. “It’s so inspiring!” they gushed. Her stomach churned. The walls of her apartment seemed to close in. She paced the small room, her steps fast, urgent.
