The harsh fluorescent lights of the pawn shop seemed to intensify, bouncing off the polished surfaces. Sarah’s eyes moved quickly, cataloging the chaos. She couldn’t shake the feeling she was forgetting something, losing something important. The air in her lungs felt shallow. She had a tight knot of tension in her jaw.

She felt a prickling heat across her skin. The smell of old metal and dust was overwhelming. Her grandmother’s ring. She had dreamt of it last night. She had to find it. Her hands were unsteady, and she gripped her purse. She had to be precise, focused. This was important.

The ring. A flash of light caught her eye. She sucked in a quick breath. It was there. Nestled between two gaudy gold chains. She took another breath, her heart hammering in her chest.
