Her entire body hummed with a strange energy. She found herself acutely aware of every sensation: the texture of the tablecloth, the scent of the perfume, the pressure of her shoes. The air felt thick, heavy with unspoken tension.

He was there, across the room. She froze, a half-eaten canapé halfway to her mouth. She swallowed, forcing a smile, willing her face not to betray her. She scanned the room, looking for an escape route.

She felt a sudden urge to flee, to disappear. She closed her eyes for a split second, taking a deep breath, before she opened them and began to scan the room.
