"Just a work call," Leo said, his voice a little too breezy, his smile a little too wide. Sarah felt a jolt of something like static electricity run up her spine. The words felt disconnected from each other. They didn't fit with his sudden trip outside, or the way he kept glancing at the door. Her breath hitched.

She stood at the window, watching him pace back and forth on the balcony, his back to her. The wind whipped his hair across his face, but he didn't seem to notice. Her own hair felt like it was standing on end. She wrapped her arms around herself, trying to find some semblance of calm. She clenched her jaw. Then, with a sudden movement, he turned and went back inside.
