Gemotions

The hum of the refrigerator seemed impossibly loud. I kept replaying the snippets of conversation I'd overheard. The hushed tones, the secretive giggles. My heart felt like it was trying to escape my chest. I sat down abruptly on the sofa, the cushions doing little to cushion my falling emotions.

I hadn't moved much since, it had felt as though my body had turned to stone. When I heard the faint click of the front door, it felt like the world had changed. I moved to the door, and looked at the hallway. Her face was flushed, her smile a little too bright.
