A sharp snap, like a twig breaking, was the first thing Maya noticed. The crisp autumn air seemed to vibrate with a tension she hadn't felt in weeks. She had her back to her driveway, taking in the rich colours of the maple trees. Spinning around at the sound, she took stock of her surroundings. A tow truck, its lights flashing, was pulling away.

Her breath hitched. She blinked, convinced she was mistaken. But the truck’s tail lights disappeared down the street, leaving a yawning emptiness in her drive. A tight knot formed in her stomach. She hadn't received a warning. She hadn't done anything wrong. Her hand flew to her chest, feeling a frantic pulse.
