The sterile waiting room echoed with the rhythmic ticking of a clock. Maya chewed on her lip, her gaze fixed on the closed door of the doctor’s office. Across from her, Chloe fidgeted, tracing patterns on her knee. “The diagnosis… you said they caught it early, right?”

Chloe nodded, her voice barely audible. "Yes. We were so lucky. The doctors caught it in time. We're celebrating a new beginning." She looked straight ahead. The words were a comfort, but Maya's gut twisted.

Maya closed her eyes, trying to force the images to dissipate. "No. I remember the doctor's face. He told us it was too late. He said there was nothing more they could do." Her heart pounded against her ribs.

Chloe's head snapped up, her eyes wide with shock. "Maya, I don't remember it that way. He said it was curable. The surgery went well…" She trailed off, her voice cracking. "Are you sure you're feeling alright? I thought the procedure went well."

Maya pushed herself to her feet, her hands trembling. "I remember the grief, the endless treatments, the… failure. I remember it all." She turned towards the door, unsure of what to do next.
