The silence of the afternoon was broken only by the rhythmic tick of the grandfather clock in the hallway. Emily, perched on the edge of her mother’s bed, felt a buzz of nervous anticipation. The boxes were finally here, fresh from the moving company.

The first box was filled with her mother’s collection of her school work. Emily felt a jolt of exhilaration. She pulled out a thick envelope, her fingers dancing across the glossy paper. Inside, she found a collection of her high school transcripts.

She grabbed the top transcript, her eyes scanning the page. Her grades were solid, but she found comments like, "Potential for greatness." Emily smiled slightly. Her mother had clearly always believed in her.
