The phone felt heavy in her hand. Emily kept rereading the email, the words a hammer blow to her sense of reality. The recipe she'd spent weeks perfecting, the one she'd poured her heart into, was now published in a popular food magazine, written by someone else.

She couldn’t focus. The sounds of the television downstairs, usually comforting, grated on her nerves. She felt a need for motion. A desperate search for answers.
