The cold wind whipped at his face. John stared at the news story on his phone, the headline a cruel mockery. His investigative report, exposing the corruption in city hall, was now under another person’s byline. He found his breath coming in ragged gasps.

He rubbed his hands together, trying to dispel the chill that had settled deep within him. He kept walking, pacing, needing to move. His thoughts were racing, his mind a whirlwind of possibilities, of how this could be fixed.

He pulled out his phone again, already drafting a response to the newspaper’s editor. He needed to act, to fight back. He felt he had no choice.
