The note on the fridge was succinct: "Celebration called off." Alex crumpled it up in his hand. His chest heaved with a breath he didn't realize he was holding. He felt every nerve ending pulse. The feeling of… everything… was overpowering.

He stalked over to the window. The world outside felt too loud, too bright, too… everything. He needed to expend the excess energy, to burn off the disappointment.

He grabbed his running shoes and laced them up. Then, before he could think twice, he burst out the door and into the street, his legs pumping, his mind focused on nothing but the pavement ahead.
