The art gallery was filled with chattering people. He’d told her he was a "collector". He felt a knot tighten in his stomach. He was acutely aware of every step, every whisper. He'd thought he had found someone special.

Across the room, he saw the face of another woman he'd been seeing. He knew, with a sinking feeling in his gut, that his life was about to change. She looked at him with an expression of betrayal. He felt pinned in place.

"John," she said, her voice loud enough to carry across the room. She was with a man.
