The aroma of freshly baked bread filled the small bakery, a comfort that did not reach Claire. She and Ben had been enjoying the morning, laughing as they experimented with different pastries. Her senses were amplified, taking in every detail of the shop.

Suddenly, the door chimed, and in walked a woman. Claire’s heart lurched. It was Melissa, the woman Ben had introduced as his "cousin". He turned towards her, a look of shock crossing his face.

“Ben!” Melissa’s voice rose, laced with disbelief. Claire felt her breath catch in her throat. She clenched her hands into fists.
