It had been a long day, and Mark was tired, but the used bookstore always invigorated him. He loved the smell of old books and the feeling of holding a piece of history. He had picked up a worn copy of *Moby Dick*, which he intended to start immediately.

He opened the book, and something slid out. A small piece of paper. He blinked, his eyes narrowing as he picked it up. His hands began to move quicker.

He examined the paper, his focus narrowed to the task. It was a scrap of a letter, a fragment of someone's life, and he was determined to understand it. He’d barely taken a breath.
