The harsh fluorescent lights of the bus station seemed to intensify around Maya as she crouched to pick up the wallet. She felt a surge of energy, a need to analyze everything around her. The grimy floor tiles, the hurried footsteps, the stale smell of coffee – all imprinted themselves on her mind.

She opened the wallet, her fingers trembling slightly. A significant sum of cash filled it. The driver’s license inside had a photo of an elderly man. She scanned the crowd, her eyes snapping from face to face.

“Excuse me, is this yours?” she asked a man with a tired expression, holding up the wallet. He shook his head, looking surprised. A strange mix of excitement and anxiety coursed through her, urging her to decide what to do.
