The microphone hummed, a low thrum that vibrated through Daniel’s fingertips as he adjusted the height. The room, usually a blur of pastel tablecloths and chattering acquaintances, was starkly focused tonight. His mother, beaming, sat at the head table, her eyes twinkling. He cleared his throat.
