The news came during band practice. The drum solo felt too fast, too loud. It was Mrs. Miller, the choir teacher. Following him on Snapchat. A coldness spread through Ben's core.

The beat of the drums seemed to echo inside his head, louder and more insistent. He made several mistakes. His usually steady hands fumbled with the drumsticks. He could barely focus.

He quickly ducked out of practice, excusing himself with a vague reason. He went home and slumped onto his bed, staring at the ceiling. The ceiling fan seemed to be spinning too fast. He felt a need to clean his room, a restless energy building inside him.
