Liam felt his breath catch in his throat as he walked into the office. Something was amiss, he knew it the instant he stepped past the front doors. The normally bustling space was subdued, almost funereal. He noticed the strained expressions on people's faces, the hurried whispers, the lack of eye contact.

He tried to focus on his work, but his mind kept wandering. He was distracted by the office gossip. He had a bad feeling in the pit of his stomach. His fingers fidgeted, and he couldn’t keep still.

He walked over to his friend’s desk, but stopped short. The words "company acquisition" flashed across the screen. He felt a sharp pang of dread. It was exactly what he'd feared. He turned around, the weight of impending change settling upon him.
