The world seemed to sharpen, the edges of everything becoming crisper, more defined. The scent of stale coffee from the morning’s pot suddenly overwhelmed her. The notice, clutched in her hand, felt like a burning coal. She couldn’t sit, she couldn’t stand still. She walked the length of the apartment, then back again. Her gaze constantly shifted, taking in the dust motes dancing in the sunlight, the cracks in the ceiling, the worn patches on the floor. Everything had become important. "This is a mistake," she declared, her voice unnaturally loud.
