“No, no, no,” David whispered, the words a frantic mantra. The eviction notice felt heavy, a weight pressing down on his chest. His senses were heightened, the sounds of the city – the distant sirens, the chattering of birds – overwhelming. He felt the blood pounding in his ears. He needed something to do, something to control. He began to straighten the already immaculate stack of mail on his table, his movements jerky and precise. The apartment suddenly felt too small, the walls closing in.
