A sharp, almost electric jolt ran through him. He’d just answered the door to a woman, clutching a folder, who introduced herself as a private investigator. “Your mother… she left me a letter,” the investigator said, her voice unusually subdued. He ushered her inside, his mind racing.

He offered her a seat, but couldn't sit. He found himself wandering the room, picking up a pen then putting it back down, touching the spines of books on the shelf. Everything felt out of place, even his own familiar surroundings.

“It’s about your father, Mr. Davies,” the investigator said, her voice soft. He clenched his jaw, his gaze locking onto a single spot on the carpet. The revelation about his half-sibling was a blow. His fists were clenching, and he found he could not stop moving, he started to go through the drawers of the kitchen, taking out things and putting them back.
